Creative Industries Precinct 2

Richard Kirk Architect + Hassell, in joint venture, were appointed Architect for QUT Creative Industries Precinct Phase 2 development in 2010 following a competitive tender process.

The project required a new master plan of the Gona Parade precinct of the QUT Kelvin Grove Campus, to provide for the new 12,000m2 Creative Industries building, facilitate a pragmatic heritage outcome and allow for two future commercial developments of 35,000m2.

By the time we were engaged by QUT, two masterplan studies had already been carried out and the project was stalled. KIRK’s contribution to the project went beyond standard architectural services by revisiting the master plan and leveraging an opportunity to re-site the main building, reuse more of the existing heritage listed buildings, and create future commercial development areas.

The project had the opportunity to increase human activity on the ground plane that encouraged a sense of place and arrival in this part of the campus. The project had an exciting architectural brief to provide a unified address for the Creative Industries faculty comprising of Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts including Research and technical pursuits.

Most of the studio spaces have access to natural light and ventilation. This led to a unique building form through the desire for degrees of transparency not normally associated with acoustically driven spaces. The openness of the building, for a range of diverse functions, yielded variable facade edge conditions that allow light and ventilation to penetrate deep into the plan.
