Creative Industries Precinct 2

Richard Kirk Architect + Hassell, in joint venture, were appointed Architect for QUT Creative Industries Precinct Phase 2 development in 2010 following a competitive tender process.
The project requires a new master plan of the Gona Parade precinct of the QUT Kelvin Grove Campus, to provide for the new 10,000m2 Creative Industries building along with two commercial developments of 35,000m2. The project has the opportunity to increase human activity on the ground plane which encourages a sense of place and arrival in this part of the campus. The context for the site is extremely dynamic; the master plan needs to respond to this shifting landscape of internal needs with those of external opportunities. The key influences are; education; heritage (which will impact on the site utilisation); and the commercial market. The strategic placement of the Creative Industries building is the critical element of the master plan.
The Creative Industries Building has an exciting architectural brief with many rich possibilities. The building’s key function as the new home for the creative disciplines is an opportunity to make a landmark facility for both University and community. The co-location of the diverse creative disciplines provides an opportunity for the building to have a rich expression.
Most of the studio spaces are required to have access to natural light and ventilation. This will lead to a unique building form through the desire for great transparency. The openness of the building, for a range of diverse functions, will yield variable facade edge conditions, which will allow light and ventilation to enter the spaces. The ground plane provides a great opportunity to create activity which can then augment the functions within. Sound plazas and performance spaces can then be a key component of the design of any public space adjacent to the building.
