Located on one of Brisbane’s prominent ridges, Dornoch Terrace in Highgate Hill, the project site contained an existing timber 1920’s residence and many established trees. It was decided to retain the existing residence and to remove all additions made to the original core in order to retain the character of the street. A new box volume containing all of the key spaces has been attached to the rear.
The North facing rectangular site, located on the southern side of Dornoch Terrace, falls 10 metres in height for a length of 60 metres. It has distant views of the University of Queensland to the south and to the north, views of the Brisbane CBD towers. The desire to capture these views and the closer views of the surrounding landscape strongly influenced the design strategy.
The project brief for a large family home required a range of living spaces that would accommodate all of their diverse activities. Retention of the existing residence and the steep site levels provided the major challenge to meeting the clients’ brief.
